Mario Muscat is the new coach of Senglea Athletic, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday.

The former Hibernians goalkeeper announced on Tuesday night that he had decided to step down as coach of Qormi FC after just six months at the helm.

“Regrettably I confirm that as from today I am not longer part of Qormi FC who have been a great family for these last 6 months.

“I would like to thank to all the committee members, coaching staff, players and supporters but most of all one kind of a man, President Victor Camilleri.

“Although last season we did not manage to reach our objective I am still proud of what we have achieced together.

“Today I can say that I am going to leave a club stronger than I found it and I promise i will still keep helping the club as much as I can.”

Initially, Muscat was planning to stay at Qormi and help them return in the Premier League top-flight but Senglea’s offer of having another season among the big boys of Maltese football was too hard to turn down for the former Malta goalkeeper.

At Senglea, Muscat will replace Enzo Potenza, who has now taken over at Floriana, and he will be assisted by Steven Vella.

Senglea are looking to build on last season’s achievement of staving relegation and president Reuben Debono is keen to strengthen the club’s fortunes.

It is interesting to note that former Malta defender Darren Debono has been elected in the new Senglea Athletic committee after several years away from local football.
