Now that the summer season has started I was looking forward to the inauguration of the upgraded part of St Thomas Bay which was left unfinished last summer. This is what the minister responsible for such works had promised when he had inaugurated with much pomp the Marsascala side of the bay.
This was not done and the sandy beach has been left in a disastrous state. St Thomas Bay is practically the only unpolluted beach in the south, frequented by thousands of families and tourists. It is no myth that the people living in the south are considered as second class citizens. Nobody cares!
To add insult to injury, some weeks ago, a pile of rubble was deposited in the middle of the so-called road just opposite the beach and people and cars have to manoeuvre round it. This, I suppose, was meant to be used to fill in and repair a part of the road which had subsided.
Historically, St Thomas Bay has always been associated with Zejtun. In popular parlance it is referred to as Ir-ramla taz-Zejtun. I am sure that if this bay had been the responsibility of the Zejtun local council, it would have been upgraded ages ago.
