Melitensium Amor, a collection of academic essays by specialists in various fields of Malta`s history, will be launched tomorrow in honour of Mgr John Azzopardi.

Affectionately known as Dun Gwann, Mgr Azzopardi is the curator at the Cathedral Museum in Mdina and at the Wignacourt Museum in Rabat.

The launch, to be held at the Catholic Institute in Floriana at 6.30 p.m., will mark Dun Gwann`s 65th birthday which coincides with the 40th anniversary of his priesthood.

Edited by Toni Cortis, Thomas Freller and Lino Bugeja, the book was printed by Gutenberg Press.

Its aim is to give due recognition to Dun Gwann`s contribution to Maltese historiography and artistic heritage. His research has been an inspiration to local and foreign scholars, the editors said.

Dun Gwann`s outstanding discoveries on Caravaggio, the Inquisition, sacred music and Pauline studies are quoted by international authors in books and academic journals.

During the launch, Prof. Anthony Bonanno, Prof. Henry Frendo and Paul Guillaumier will give an overview of the book`s contents.

The essays throw light on a wide spectrum of Malta`s chequered history and include A Muslim Society under Christian Rule by Charles Dalli; An Overlooked Eyewitness`s Account to the Great Siege by Giovanni Bonello; Rules and Regulations for Maltese Corsairs by Joseph Muscat; and Caravaggio and Preti: Their Theologies Compared by John T. Spike.
