At a recent meeting of the University’s Senate, it was decided to accept a proposal made by Ph.D. graduand, Dr Roger Vella Bonavita, that the word ‘Melit.’ be added after the abbreviated name of all University of Malta awards.

The University said the  aim of this is to clearly identify the graduates’ alma mater.  In this case, the addition is an abbreviated form of the Latin name for Malta – Melita. This follows the tradition of using the Latin name for towns and cities as in the University of Cambridge (Cantab.) for Cantabrigia or University of Durham (Dunelm), a shorter version of the Latin, Dunelmensis.

All University of Malta graduates may now add (Melit.) to their degree abbreviations: e.g. B.A.(Melit.); B.A.(Hons)(Melit.); M.Sc.(Melit.); Ph.D.(Melit.)
