Giovanni Bonello has been elected president of the Malta Historical Society. He takesover from Mario Buhagiarwho has served two terms as president.

The Malta Historical Society, which last year celebrated its 60th anniversary, is Malta’s scholarly association for the study and dissemination of Maltese history. It publishes an annual journal entitled Melita Historica.

Judge of the European Court of Human Rights between 1998 and 2010, Judge Bonello is also an impassioned researcher on the social and artistic history of Malta.

His publications include 16 volumes on history and art-related subjects, four of which were awarded the Best Book of the Year award by the National Book Council.

He is Companion of the National Order of Merit, Cavaliere of the Italian Republic, Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and was awarded the special Gold Medal of the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, the Insignia of Merit by the Russian Federation for outstanding achievement, and the extraordinary gold medal by the Judiciary of the Republic of Moldova.
