A Somali migrant who arrived in Malta last week died at Hal Far detention centre this afternoon. The man had been in a group rescued from a dinghy 75 miles south of Malta by the AFM.

He fell ill suddenly at about 2.30 p.m. - having not complained of anything while a doctor was at the detention centre in the morning.

The migrant was taken to Floriana health centre where a doctor diagnosed gastro enteritis and diarrhoea. He was prescribed medicines and taken back to the detention centre.

On his return to the newly-refurbished detention centre he vomited again and lost consciousness.

A nurse who was on site found no pulse and he was declared dead soon afterwards.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale is holding an inquiry, assisted by court expert Dr Mario Scerri.
