The Opposition this evening announced it was backing a government motion for the transfer of land in Pembroke for the building of a new Chinese embassy.

The decision was announced at a meeting of the Parliamentary Audit Committee.

The government late last year had announced it was planning to transfer 19 tumoli of land to the Chinese government for the building of the new embassy with the same conditions adopted by the former administration for the land given to the United States for the building of its embassy in Ta’ Qali. The Chinese embassy had committed in writing that it would follow all the local laws and procedures. However, it could not present any plans since these would be drawn up once the land was purchased.

The final decision had been postponed from November while the opposition sought clarifications on the proximity to the residential area.
