Transport Malta has started consultations with stakeholders aimed at developing a new road safety strategy.

Malta already has a low road accident fatality record compared to the rest of the EU. It had, however, a high incidence of minor road accidents.

Addressing a consultation conference, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said that the good results obtained by Malta so far were due to a number of initiatives already taken by Transport Malta including safer speed limits, improved laws related to drink-driving, mandatory use of crash helmets and seat belts and the prohibition of the use of mobile phones during driving.

He said that the government would continue to give major importance to this issue even through the creation of a new Road Safety Council which would include all related stakeholders.

The new National Road Safety Strategy document sets out a 10-year direction.

The EU is aiming to half fatal road accidents by 2020.
