Updated 6.34am Wednesday - A Żabbar shop owner and two passers-by on Tuesday evening foiled an attempted hold-up in which at least one shot was fired.

A hooded man armed with a revolver entered the Crystal Palace confectionery in narrow Main Street at 8.10pm and ordered the shop owner to hand over the money in the till.

But the owner resisted, promptly helped by three young men who rushed in and held the intruder, people on the scene said.

In the ensuing tussle, the revolver went off but nobody was hurt.

Officers from the police Rapid Intervention Unit quickly reached the scene and arrested the intruder, a 46-year-old man.

Investigations are ongoing, the police said.
