Appreciation - Bennie Grech

Alfred Sladden writes:

It is very hard to realise that our dear friend and sailing colleague, Bennie Grech, is no more. Besides sharing a passion for sailing, Bennie and myself were also for a long number of years summer neighbours in Wied il-Buni, Birzebbuga. I can still recall our keen dinghy races in Marsaxlokk Bay, when we were both much younger, and the nasty words which were sometimes bandied about between us, and with other competitors, but then those who race a boat know that among sailors there is often plenty of barking but no biting!

Bennie did a lot for sailing in Malta and his presence as a race officer was a feature at most major local regattas. I remember the last occasions when I took him sailing on my boat about two summers ago. He enjoyed at least two thrilling moments on these sails; one when I passed him the helm and the other when I passed him a tot of whisky!

I leave the last word to a more distinguished writer, the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his famous The Rime of the Ancient Mariner:
"He prayeth best, who loveth best
All things both great and small;
For the great God who loveth us,
He made and loveth all"
