ABELA. On December 16, IMELDA née Abela, of Marsascala, aged 72, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. Greatly missed by her husband Frans, her children Carmen and her husband Lino, Alfred and his wife Darlene of Canada, Rita and her husband Mario, her six grandchildren, her brother Charles of Australia, her sisters Julia of Canada, Bersabea, Jessie, Polly and their families, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves her residence today for St Anne parish church, Marsascala where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2 p.m. followed by interment at Zabbar cemetery. Chinese Economy

Hui Jiong Wang will be speaking on how China is shaping up to the new economic challenges in the wake of globalisation at the Chinese Cultural Centre, Valletta, tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Prof. Hui is vice president of the academic committee of the Development Centre of the State Council in China.

China's economy has maintained a high growth rate for the past 20 years, bringing huge business opportunities and injecting energy into the world economy.

The lecture will deal with the prospects of China's economy and the impact of SARS, among other themes.

Prayer evening

The International Movement of Prayer Blessed Pope John XXIII will be holding an evening of prayer at the chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Capuchin Convent in Floriana today at 5 p.m.

Live Crib

The St Julians Scout Group is organising a live crib at Wied Ghomor, in the valley between San Gwann and Swieqi, on December 23 and 24, from 7 - 11 p.m. and on Christmas Day from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 - 9 p.m.

The crib will be illuminated with fjakkoli scattered in the valley.

Midnight Mass will be celebrated next to the crib on Christmas Eve.

Film Competition

To coincide with the much anticipated final film in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy - the Return of the King, the Eden Century Cinemas have teamed up with Globalair Travel and the Science Museum to send two people to London for a long weekend in January, to visit the world's only Lord of the Rings exhibition at the London Science Museum.

Those who watch any film in the trilogy at the Eden Century Cinemas in St Julians or Fgura will be given the chance to enter the competition to visit London and see all that went into making these epic films.

Piano Contest

The 15th Vianna Da Motta International Music (Piano) Competition will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, between July 19 and 31. The competition is open to pianists of all nationalities, aged between 18 - 28.

Applications together with a registration fee of $150 should reach the competition secretariat in Lisbon, Portugal by January 31.

The organisers of the Young Artists Concerts in the US are seeking performers for professional solo careers (ages 16 - 26) in solo instruments, string quartets and singers, particularly for recital work.
