A late penalty and a drop goal helped South Africa to begin the defence of their Tri-Nations title with a 22-16 victory over Australia in the opening game yesterday in Pretoria.

The Springboks now travel to Cape Town where they will continue the defence of their Tri-nations title against New Zealand next Saturday.
