Juan Corbalan is set to complete his transfer to Ħamrun Spartans in the coming hours after agreeing personal terms with the Premier League side.

Earlier on Thursday, the Times of Malta had reported that Ħamrun Spartans had reached an agreement with Gżira United over the transfer of the Malta international.

However, the transfer was pending to agreeing personal terms with the Reds. Corbalan is understood to have met with the Spartans top hierarchy on Thursday afternoon and an agreement was finalised.

Sources have told the Times of Malta that the player has already waved goodbye to his team-mates on Thursday and is expected to become a new Ħamrun Spartans player by the weekend.

The acquisition of Corbalan is seen as a major transfer coup from the Spartans and as they look to build a competitive team that will see them challenge for major honours in the upcoming season.

In fact, Corbalan has emerged as one of the young sensations in Maltese football in the last two years after managing to break into the national team under former coach Ray Farrugia.

Speculation was rife in the last few days about the future of Corbalan who still had one year left on his contract with Gżira United.

Initiatlly it was thought that Corbalan was set to remain with Gżira United.

However, the Spartans were determined to get their man and made a lucrative offer to the Maroons which they couldn’t turn down.

Corbalan is expected to become Ħamrun’s first major signing of the summer and will send a real statement of intent by the Reds who have been bolstered by the backing of Gozitan businessman Joseph Portelli.

Corbalan is set to be the first of a series of transfers made by the Spartans. In fact, the Reds are currently in talks to sign midfielder Ige Adeshina.

Last season, the Nigerian enjoyed an excellent season with Sirens and enjoys a good relationship with new Ħamrun Spartans coach Mark Buttigieg with whom he worked when he was on the books of SK Victoria Wanderers.

Meanwhile, in the next few days, Buttigieg is expected to finalise his backroom staff with former Ħamrun striker Stefan Sultana expected to be handed the job of assistant coach.

For Sultana this will not be his first coaching appointment with the senior team having been part of the club's technical staff a few years ago.

The Spartans are also set to appoint a new team manager, which is likely to be another former player at the club.
