Arrigoni sacked: Daniele Arrigoni, the Livorno coach, was fired yesterday after the 5-1 thrashing at Atalanta. He had been on a tightrope for several months after rows with president Aldo Spinelli over his squad selection and tactical choices. "I am ashamed of this team," slammed Spinelli at the Stadio Azzurri d'Italia yesterday. "It is impossible to concede 10 goals in three games."

Resilient coach: Troubled Paris SG coach Guy Lacombe said yesterday he wanted to fight on but realised the club had a real problem. The club are just one place above the drop zone in Ligue 1 with just 19 points from as many games and on Saturday they stumbled to an embarrassing 2-1 home defeat by fellow strugglers Valenciennes. "I am not a resigned person but this defeat shows that the problem is more serious than we had thought," Lacombe told reporters.

Mourinho: Captain John Terry said he and his Chelsea team-mates did not want Jose Mourinho to leave and were ready to plead the manager's case with the club hierarchy. "We all agree we don't want Jose to go and if it takes five or six of the senior players to tell them so, then that's what we're prepared to do," Terry said. Mourinho's future has been the subject of intense speculation for several days, with reports suggesting the Portuguese coach will quit the Premier League champions at the end of the season.

Lobont: Romania international goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont is set to leave Fiorentina and sign a three-year contract for a second spell at Dinamo Bucharest, the player's agent said yesterday. "Lobont will return home on Monday (today) to join Dinamo Bucharest for a three-year deal," Victor Becali told Reuters. "He sent his agreement by fax." Becali gave no financial details but sources close to Dinamo said the transfer fee was 500,000 euros while Lobont's annual wage would be 320,000 euro, one of the highest in Romanian soccer.

Getafe: Getafe president Angel Torres has promised to get tough with fans who make racist chants at games, after Valencia's Portuguese defender Miguel was abused during the King's Cup match last week. The referee stopped Wednesday's match during the second half and asked the club to put out an announcement over the public address system, after fans chanted abuse at Miguel. Getafe made an appeal and put a message up on the scoreboard.

Beckham schedule: David Beckham's schedule got a little busier yesterday when it was announced that Los Angeles Galaxy would take part in a new SuperLiga competition that includes top teams from the MLS and Mexico. The Galaxy will compete with seven other clubs. There will be four teams each from the MLS and the Mexican Soccer Federation's first division playing in what is being touted as the pre-eminent club tournament in North America.

Ligue 1: St Etienne vs Monaco 0-1; Rennes vs Marseille 0-2.
