Sports journalist Henry Calleja has died aged 77.

Mr Calleja was a long-standing broadcaster on national station PBS and also played an active role in the sports journalism lobbying organisation Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports. He also served on the Malta Olympic Committee.

Before joining PBS, Mr Calleja worked as a sports journalist for The Malta Independent.

In a statement, the Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sport hailed Calleja as a symbol of Maltese sports journalism.

"Calleja will remain synonymous with the first years of sport productions through the Rediffusion in the sixties and later with Radju Malta," the statement said.

"He also had an experience in printing journalism with several newspapers including Il-Ħajja, The Malta Independent and earlier with The Bulletin.

"Henry Calleja was one of the founding members of the Għaqda Kittieba Sports in 1970 and served as president between 1987 and 2003. He was named Honorary President last year.

"The Executive Committee of the Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports passes its deepest condolences to his family."

In another statement, PN Sports spokesman Ryan Callus offered Mr Calleja's family the PN's condolences.
