Aircraft maintenance company SR Technics is to expand its Malta operation and has reached an agreement with the government to build a €35 million six-bay hangar at the Aviation Park in Safi.

The company said it would initially focus on narrow-body aircraft but will expand to larger planes. It also had plans to recruit and train up to 300 more workers, doubling its workforce.

The agreement on the new hangar was signed at the Auberge de Castille in the presence of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who said the agreement took a year to conclude since it was “long and complex”. This, he said, would take the aviation sector another step forward.

“All this is positive but there are more goals to reach,” Dr Muscat said.

He said the government was drawing up a strategic plan for the aviation industry and officials were considering areas around the airport which could facilitate the growth of the sector.

With a size of 30,000 sqm, including workshop space, the new infrastructure will enable SR Technics to increase its capacity for heavy maintenance, C-checks and any cabin modifications or retrofits to up to six narrow-body aircraft at a time.

Construction will begin this year, with a scheduled completion date of November 2019 for the first four bays. Operations will initially focus on the Airbus A320 family and the Boeing 737NG. To handle demand while the new hangar is being built, SR Technics will incorporate a third bay as of November 2018 in a temporary hangar next to the existing facility.

Since the opening of the Malta operation in October 2010, the SR Technics Maltese employees – currently 260 in number – have serviced over 250 aircraft.
