ST ANDREWS 0

FLORIANA       0

Floriana and St Andrews produced a scrappy encounter that produced no goals at the Centenary Stadium.

St Andrews held the edge throughout but failed to make the most of the chances that came their way as both teams had to settle for a point that left them in a mid-table position.

The first action of note arrived on 21 minutes when Kevaughn Atkinson stormed inside the area but seemed to be upended by Alex Cini but referee Etienne Mangion waved play on.

Seven minutes later, Floriana goalkeeper Ini Akpan had to be alert to push away Atkinson’s thumping drive.

Nine minutes from half-time, St Andrews had another good opportunity to forge ahead when from a Kevin Davis free-kick, the ball flew across the face of goal and in came Kemar Reid who, however, deflected the ball just past the upright.

The second half maintained the same script with St Andrews continuing to create the better chances.

On 52 minutes, Davis entered inside the area and his low drive was blocked Akpan.

Davis should have put St Andrews ahead on 66 minutes when he was at the end of an Amoy Brown low cross but the nippy midfielder fired over in front of a gaping goal.

It was all St Andrews now and on 70 minutes, Akpan had to dive to his left to push away Reid’s low shot.

Floriana’s first attempt on target arrived on 84 minutes when from a Steve Pisani, Varela’s header was saved by Matthew Calleja Cremona.

The Saints no. 1 again distinguished himself a minute later when showed great reflexes to  keep out Saleh’s cross-shot.

St Andrews finished the match with ten men when Amoy Brown received two yellow cards in the space of a minute.

St Andrews midfielder Martin Davis was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
