A drunken Irishman who attacked a man in the street while walking through Swieqi was yesterday given a suspended one-year jail term and ordered to pay €320 for damage he caused to two cars.

Sean Mcgahern, 34, punched Guido Farrugia in the face and cut his chin open after he instigated a fight with him while in a drunken state, police sources said.

The incident happened on September 26 between 4 and 9 a.m. The case took so long to be brought to court because the accused had also assaulted two police officers after they tried to arrest him, Police Inspector Martin Sammut said.

He also admitted to causing €200 worth of damage to a car and €120 to a police vehicle in the same incident, slightly injuring another man, breaching the peace and being drunk.

Mr Mcgahern filed an early guilty plea.
