A Siġġiewi chapel dating to the 15th century will be undergoing restoration to the tune of €1.4 million.

Underground consolidation works on the historic Chapel of the Annunciation in the area known as tal-Għolja have already kicked off.

During a press conference on Monday, National Heritage Minister Owen Bonnici said the chapel faces imminent risk of collapse, primarily due to the geological and geomorphological issues in its terrain.

After the Siġġiewi community flagged the issue, the national and ecclesiastical authorities held technical studies on the site.

Administrative Secretary for the Archdiocese of Malta Michael Pace Ross said the studies were carried out on the fault known as Miġra Ilma.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli and Mayor of Siġġiewi Dominic Grech also addressed the press conference.
