The prime minister, as minister of home affairs, has asked the police to reconsider a clause in recruitment conditions which bars applications from people who wear tattoos.
The clause was introduced in April last year and drew criticism from some quarters. It applied to all tattoos, whether visible or hidden under clothing.
Dr Gonzi, replying to a parliamentary question, said he had asked for this clause to be reconsidered in the context of the situation in police forces in the European Union.
Labour MP Joe Mizzi had asked whether the prime minister considered it an anachronism that such a condition existed.
