Giovanni Tedesco has stepped down as coach of Ħamrun Spartans.

The Italian coach has filed his letter of resignation at the Malta Football Association on Friday morning, despite having another year left on his contract with the Premier League club.

Tedesco, who took over at Ħamrun at the start of last season, took this decision as he is keen to accept the offer made to him by fellow Premier League side Gżira United.

The former Floriana and Birkirkara coach enjoyed a fine season at Ħamrun as he helped the Reds to their best placing in the Premier League for many years when they ended the campaign in fourth place.

That final placing could earn the Spartans are return to European football after almost 30 years should Valletta beat Balzan in Saturday's FA Trophy final at the National Stadium.

Gżira United has made no secret of their interest in taking Tedesco in their ranks but the Italian coach must reach a settlement with his former club and recompensate them of his remaining 12 months of his contract.
