The systematic onslaught on the environment of Balzan, which has already claimed a number of casualties in the Old Railway Road area, has now approached the village centre with the notification from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority of the eventual demolition of Villa Macedonia in Sisner Street.

This jewel of a villa, and the surrounding garden full of ornamental and citrus trees, was built by the late Count Bernardo Manduca Piscopo Macedonia Zamitt (1891-1971) in 1934 as his personal residence and has played an important role in the social and cultural life of the village community throughout the lifetime of this noble benefactor of our village.

Notice has now been given of plans for this spacious and imposing villa to give way for the erection of 10 semi-detached villas. Who will save Balzan, and other localities sharing the same plight, from the ravages of this pseudo-development?
