Tributes are streaming in for Nationalist MP Ivan Bartolo as the former Mosta mayor prepares to donate one of his kidneys - a gesture made all the more altruistic as the organ will go to a stranger.

In a statement, Speaker Anġlu Farrugia honoured Mr Bartolo's "noble and altruistic" gesture.

Dr Farrugia wished Mr Bartolo a speedy recovery and said he hoped the new MP would be back on his feet by the time Parliament reconvened following its summer recess. 

Nationalist Party leadership candidate Alex Perici Calascione was also among those to pay tribute to the MP, describing him as "a person of principle".
