UPDATED - A 73-year-old British diver died in hospital this afternoon after having encountered difficulties off Cirkewwa. A 31 year-old Hungarian diver who went to his assistance also encountered problems and was injured. He was treated in hospital and dismissed.

Informed sources said the divers were in a deep dive when one of them encountered problems and the other rescued him.

Both were rushed to hospital after being given first aid on shore. The Briton suffered cardiac difficulties while the other had a head injury.

A medical team, Civil Protection rescuers and policemen were on the scene.
