Driven by Rodney Gatt, French Up And Go won Sunday’s major event at the Marsa Racetrack.

This was the 2019 edition of the prestigious Tazza l-Kbira competition for class Premier trotters on a long distance of 2640m.

This final formed part of the 20th meeting of the season made up of ten races all for trotters. Yesterday’s card also included a normal class Premier race on a long distance of 3140m.

Twelve trotters lined up in the class Premier final, organised this year thanks to the financial support of Bank Of Valletta.

As expected, Axel Tilly (Julian Farrugia) was the fastest horse at first, opening a small lead from Un Carless Blue (Joseph Verbeeck) and Upman (Noel Baldacchino).

With 900m to go, Rodney Gatt, started to increase its pace on the outside with Up And Go and this French eleven year old trotter took the lead around 300m from the finishing line.

Up And Go sealed its fifth win of the year and in Malta after staving off the challenge of Ultra De Vindecy (Michael Ellul) in the final straight.

Un Amour Du Pont (Andrew Farrugia) ended in third place from Sandsjons Revenue (Charles Camilleri). Axel Tilly had to settle for fifth place.

This in the presence of Edwin Borg, MRC chairman.

The winner clocked an average time of 1.14.5” per kilometre. This was the best time ever registered in the Tazza l-Kbira final.

In the normal class Premier race, the early leader, Un Roi d’Atout (Jesmar Gafa’) ran out of steam midway throught the final straight and was overtaken by Titan d’Abo (Charles Camilleri) which eventually gained its first win of the year.
