A battling Valletta side beat Juventus 4-3 on penalties this evening after holding the Italian football giants 1-1 at Ta'Qali.

Both goals during the match were scored late in the first half. Ruben Oliviera opened the account for Juve in the 43rd minute but Valletta's Monesterolo replied in kind a minute later.

The match was played before a large crowd, with the citizens much more vocal on the terraces.

Both sides made many changes for the second half, and although Juventus held the initiative for most of the time, Valletta defended well and also had scoring chances.

The penalties were scored by Zammit, Mattocks, Mifsud and Falzon for Valletta and Iaquinta, Palladino and Mendes for Juventus, with Nocerino shot wide and LeGrottaglie's effort was saved by Valletta substitute goalkeeper Darmanin.

Juventus are in Malta on a training camp until Friday.
