Clean lines, flying buttresses and splashes of colour – for centuries Valletta has echoed with the gasps of pedestrians who, on their way to somewhere else, are flabbergasted by the sudden spark of baroque magic.

The capital city’s architecture was on Sunday reflected in the polished brilliance of vintage and classic cars, the protagonists of this year’s edition of the Valletta Concours d’Elegance, held at St George’s Square.

Proud owners were keen to show visitors their cherished cars – from a 1936 Fiat Topolino and a 1932 Pontiac to various Jaguar models, a Citroen Traction Avant, an Aston Martin, a Chevrolet Corvette and an Alfa Romeo Montreal Coupé.

Some of the models made it to the competition from Italy, while a 1955 Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire came all the way from Germany.

These were entered into different categories of the competition, including American cars, light commercial cars, Mini Minors, sports, modern classic and popular classic cars.

Members of the public were encouraged to take part in the period costume category, adding glamour and fun to proceedings.

First held in 2017, the event has been attracting more participants each year.

An international panel of judges decides upon the winner of each category, based on a set of predetermined criteria – including originality, authenticity, attention to design, styling, elegance and state of preservation – and proclaim the best in show.
