With the boom creating some 12,000 new jobs every year, the time will come when the country may have to call a halt on the importation of labour, the JobsPlus executive chairman has said.

This means that the benefits of economic growth must be ‘wisely’ invested,  Clyde Caruana said on Times Talk.

“For the moment, the economy and the country can absorb more people. However, we have to be wise and make sure that the economy benefits that we are getting now are invested in the economy so that it can develop.

“Then we can grow the economy by becoming more productive – rather than by bringing in more people,” he said.

Mr Caruana warned that the native supply of labour was “almost exhausted” but that the country could not absorb foreign workers indefinitely.
