Plumes of black smoke rose out of Marsaxlokk this afternoon after a fire broke out on a barge at the village's hard standing facility.

Footage sent to Times of Malta showed angry clouds of dark smoke billowing into the sky, with one reader saying they heard what sounded like an explosion moments before the fire broke out.

"It's a very difficult situation for emergency services," one reader said, noting that Sunday was an especially busy day in Marsaxlokk.

A spokesman for the Civil Protection Department said fire crews were at the scene and working hard to put out the flames.

Police confirmed that nobody was hurt in the incident.
