A powerful typhoon killed at least 10 people in western Japan, the government said on Wednesday, as some 3,000 stranded passengers started evacuating a flooded airport by boat.

The storm, named Jebi, was briefly classified as a super typhoon.

Japan's most powerful typhoon in 25 years hit the country's west coast on Tuesday.
