Malta close to deal on burden sharing
Substantial progress was reported to have been achieved yesterday in Malta’s efforts to include a commitment on burden sharing in the EU’s new Migration Pact.
Sources close to the EU Council last night said the majority of member states that originally objected to Malta’s proposal have decided to lift their reservations.
“There is still one member state that is insisting on different wording in the text as suggested by Malta, but this should be thrashed out by justice ministers,” sources said. The sources, however, did not reveal the identity of this particular member state “because normally these discussions are held behind closed doors”.

Harrington was also charged with threatening and offending prison officials. Police inspectors John Rizzo and Emanuel Cassar prosecuted. The court referred him to Mount Carmel Hospital.
The trouble in jail began at around 11am when the prisoners in the tighter security division saw a Public Broadcasting Services crew filming in the prisons.
The crew had been allowed access to film the area where the disused gallows are, for a documentary.
The division’s inmates also protested against returning to their cells. Prison authorities took all the necessary precautions to control the disturbance immediately, a Department of Information statement said.
Members of the police special assignment group were called in while a helicopted hovered over the area.
A spokesman for the prisons said that the inmates were separated.
