The coronavirus pandemic has changed our behaviour. Now it's time to improve our current behaviour, starting with mask maintenance.

According to a survey conducted by Medik Malta, 37 per cent of people still don't change their masks frequently. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) which recommends using medical masks, notes that a mask’s efficacy is already compromised after just four hours of use. After using and removing a mask, you should dispose of it in a rubbish bin.  

But why then, do many people use and re-use these face masks over and over? 

"90 per cent of our customers maintain their masks in exactly the same way as the onset of COVID-19 by not changing them frequently, a behaviour we noted in the first wave of the pandemic,” said Alessio Ripanti, the founder of Medik Malta.

“Back then, it was hard to buy masks in bulk – and for a fair price. However, nowadays there are companies like ours selling medical face mask in Malta for 16 cents each for customers and nine cents each for companies, combined with great prices on rapid tests, I don't see why anyone can’t stock up on them and use masks effectively. According to WHO, surgical medical masks do their job precisely, but you can't expect to meet your coworkers or clients and re-use it over and over again.

“Vaccines won't be available soon for everyone at once. Now it's time to be conscious of our and others' health for the last sprint. What we suggest is simple and backed up by the WHO's recommended best practice.
