Police look for Nigerian man
The Police have requested the public’s co-operation in an effort to trace a Nigerian man they want to question in connection with the disappearance of a newborn baby.
The man, Ayinde Gbenga Awlola, 40, used to live with the baby’s mother in It-Turisti Street, Qawra. Reliable sources said the mother, who is also Nigerian, gave birth in her flat without any assistance on Sunday. The police were called in to investigate when some days later there were no signs of the baby.
New hotel at Salina opened
Malta’s latest in four-star luxury was officially inaugurated yesterday – the Coastline Hotel at Salina. It is in an idyllic setting – an inviting sea at its front and undeveloped, unspoilt land around. It is not untouched by environmental problems, however, as Winston V. Zahra, managing director of the owners, Island Hotels Ltd, told guests at the opening last night, the Salina salt pans are the source of an uninviting smell, the Coast Road remains unlit and the Magħtab dump is a “disaster area”.
Dr Michael Refalo, Minister for Youth and the Arts, who officially opened the hotel, told guests tourism figures grew 17 per cent in May, with Britain supplying 46 per cent of the total.

Government measures to meet transport emergency
The House of Representatives yesterday urgently passed a Bill amending the Traffic Regulations Ordinance for the more efficient running of public transport as the need arises.
The Bill was carried through all stages following consultations between the government and the Opposition to meet the emergency arising out of the bus owners’ notice of discharge of drivers and conductors as from tomorrow.
Prime Minister Dr G. Borg Olivier said that yesterday the General Transport Union informed him that as from tomorrow they would not have drivers and conductors to operate the service.
Laboratory Wharf handed over to government
The Admiralty yesterday handed over Laboratory Wharf, Royal Naval Armament Depot to the government. The wharf, together with large parcels of land at Corradino Heights, were to be handed later this month. But the transfer was accelerated because of the imminent start of the car ferry service and because the extension of Coal Wharf originally intended as the ferry’s berth is not yet completed.
