A decision on divorce should be taken to keep the country away from the current uncertainty on the issue, Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Michael Briguglio said this morning.

Addressing a news conference, Mr Briguglio called on the Prime Minister to take a decision on the issue.

He pointed out while certain recent surveys confirmed that most people wanted a decision to be taken, the two main parties were adding to the uncertainty by not taking a stand.

Recent remarks made by the Prime Minister, he said, showed that it was unclear whether a referendum would really take place.

Meanwhile, the PL’s strategy of aiming to please everyone by not taking a stand was not helping.

AD, he said, was the first party to take a stand on the matter and the party was now urging the Prime Minister to present a clear roadmap on divorce.

This would benefit not only those campaigning in favour or against but also the thousands of separated couples who would like to rebuild their family life.

Spokesman for civil rights Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer pointed out that Maltese society was going through various changes.

While having a stable family was a very positive value that many shared and wanted to aspire to, the reality was different, she said.

Ms Arqueros Ebejer said that certain issues such as unstableness and domestic violence led many to want to move on with their lives and the people should not be denied divorce legislation.

This, she insisted, was a civil right.

She pointed out that politics was all about making a difference to people’s lives and introducing divorce legislation would make a difference to thousands in Malta.
