€1million allocated for damage caused by Storm Harry to private property

Damage must not be covered by insurance policy

Transport Malta and the Transport Ministry have allocated €1million for damage caused by Storm Harry to private property that is not covered by insurance policies.

Each application by a private individual, NGO or business can claim up to €5,000 and needs to be submitted by February 9.

Funds will be disbursed from the Corporate Social Responsibility purse. This fund is made up of funds collected through traffic infringement administrative fines.

Damage caused to solar panels, fish farms and greenhouses will not be covered.

In a statement on Thursday morning, TM and the ministry said priority will be given to damage caused in coastal towns and villages that experienced abnormal sea rise and storm surge.

It will also target damage caused experienced in urban and residential areas impacted by fallen or displaced street vegetation and wind-driven external forces, resulting in vehicles, structural, façade, access, or safety-related damage.

Eligibility

  • Façade and external envelope damage, including balconies, cladding and soffits
  • Street-level and access damage, including doors, gates, ramps, retaining walls and pavements directly in front of the residence
  • Ancillary and safety-critical works, including emergency stabilisation, temporary protection, electrical failures, collapsed boundary walls and damage caused by falling or uprooted public vegetation

Non-exhaustive list of damages that are potentially eligible for financial assistance:

  • Vehicles not insured for full comprehensive damage by seawater, flooding, fire, falling trees or infrastructure
  • Private boats not insured for full comprehensive damage by the storm
  • Outdoor furniture belonging to establishments or households
  • Garage doors, external doors, apertures, balconies
  • Any damages caused to electrical systems, components, water or other sources of communications

Exclusions

  • Properties insured for the same damages unless proof of rejection or partial coverage is provided
  • Cosmetic works or pre-existing defects not directly attributable to the weather event
  • Public entities covered through alternative government funding mechanisms
