Gozo residents stranded in Malta by Storm Harry can claim for some costs

Online applications are now open

A scheme to reimburse Gozitans forced to book overnight accommodation in Malta due to the ferry service being suspended during Storm Harry has been opened.

In a statement, the Gozo Ministry said the scheme would assist Gozitans who became stranded in Malta when the ferry was suspended on January 19 and 20.

The scheme partially covers the cost of nights spent in hotels, hostels and other licensed establishments, the ministry said, without providing further details.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said the scheme was to “ensure that no Gozitan resident bears a financial burden due to circumstances beyond their control”, reflecting the government’s “commitment to being there for Gozitans.”

Applications may be made online at the following link or using the MyGozo app.

Those applying will need to provide a valid ID card listing Gozo as the applicant’s primary residence, and accommodation receipts displaying the name of the establishment, the dates spent and the total amount paid.

Storm Harry was one of the worst storms to hit Malta in recent years, wreaking havoc in coastal communities, cancelling ferries and triggering a major weather warning.

Heavy goods vehicles faced long queues at Ċirkewwa and Mġarr harbours when the Gozo ferry service resumed following the two-day suspension.
