Special equipment to dig tunnels as part of the Interconnector system linking Malta to the European electricity grid arrived on the island on Friday.

This 77-metre-long tunnel machine can shift up to 50 metres of rock and sand within 20 hours. It will be excavating the five-kilometre circular passage between Magħtab terminal station and Pembroke distribution centre, which will eventually connect to Enemalta’s high voltage grid.
