A 50-year-old man from Senglea was yesterday jailed for two years after pleading guilty to a string of thefts worth more than €7,000 in the past two months.

Shifting nervously before Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona, Carmel Mugliett pleaded for understanding, saying he stole cash and jewellery out of a desperate need to survive. But the magistrate told the man, who has a criminal record, that his offences merited a custodial sentence.
