Abela warns against online speculation following DJ and woman's death
Robert Abela urges social media users to consider the impact of speculation on grieving families
Prime Minister Robert Abela has urged the public to avoid online speculation following the deaths of DJ Ryan Spiteri and a woman who was with him.
In a social media post on Wednesday afternoon, Abela called for restraint and asked people to consider the effect their words could have on the victims’ families.
“This tragedy should also remind us of the responsibility we all bear in the way we use our words, especially on social media.”
“Before engaging in any form of speculation, we must consider the impact our words may have on families who are going through the most difficult of times.”
Abela said that, at such a fragile moment, “truth, respect and a sense of humanity” should remain the priority.
His appeal came after social media users shared speculation and conspiracy theories about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Spiteri, 47, and the woman were found dead in a car in Marsascala on Tuesday evening. The woman had not been publicly named.
Police said the pair had died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. A magisterial inquiry is underway.
In his post, Abela paid tribute to Spiteri and also honoured the memory of the woman who died alongside him.
He recalled meeting Spiteri in the past together with his wife, Lydia, and daughter, Giorgia.
Abela said Spiteri had not only brought joy to people through his music but was also “a person full of humility and energy.”
Spiteri was best known for his Rewind show and had previously worked as a presenter at ONE Radio and Vibe FM.
News of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from friends, colleagues and listeners, many of whom shared photographs and messages of condolence.
Several described their disbelief at the DJ's sudden death.
On Monday, Spiteri held an after-party in Valletta following the youths' march for the feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, which made his death all the more shocking for friends and followers.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing, while the magisterial inquiry will seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths.
