ADPD calls for investigation into €6 million direct order to rebuild race course

Green party asks Auditor General to determine whether the direct order constitutes a 'blatant abuse of regulation'

The green party has called on the Auditor General to investigate a €6 million direct order for the reconstruction of a drag racing course in Ħal Far.

In a statement Thursday, ADPD asked the Auditor General to investigate whether Infrastructure Malta’s awarding of the contract to Elbros Construction Ltd by direct order constituted “blatant abuse of the public procurement regulations".

The contract, which was announced in the government gazette on August 1, is for the “reconstruction of drag racing strip (incl. containment walls) for homologation (SportMalta)”.

The party called for an investigation into the direct order, citing public regulations governing the rules for issuing such orders.

Requirements for issuing direct orders include tender applications – or suitable applications – not being received, a service only being able to be fulfilled by one operator, the protection of exclusive rights, “extreme urgency” or repeating similar works with the original operator, according to the regulations.

The statement was signed by deputy chairperson Carmel Cacopardo.
