Alex Borg says he will announce shadow cabinet soon

PN leader expected to create 'tiered' cabinet including shadow ministers and spokespersons

Updated 3pm

Alex Borg is expected to create a "tiered" shadow cabinet that includes shadow ministers and others referred to as spokespersons.

The PN leader met with his MPs on Wednesday to shape his team and told journalists as he entered parliament in the afternoon that its makeup would be announced "in the coming moments".

"There will be positive changes that go along the needs of the PN," he said.

Sources said it will likely include major “overhauls”.

“The idea is to present what a PN government will look like and to single out those MPs who would feature strongly under a Nationalist Party administrations,” one source said.

A string of MPs, including Mark Anthony Sammut, Beppe Galea, Stephen Spiteri, Rebekah Borg, Beppe Fenech Adami and Stanley Zammit were seen at party headquarters throughout the morning. Others were expected to be spoken to by phone.

Shadow ministers are responsible for following the sectoral work done by their counterparts in government, and serving as the PN's spokesperson for the sectors they are entrusted with.

Borg's move to start compiling his team comes a week after the party's entire parliamentary group was finalised, following casual elections and the addition of six other PN MPs through the implementation of parliament's gender corrective mechanism.

It will be the PN leader's second shadow cabinet, following one he compiled weeks after he assumed the party leadership last September.

The PN leader will address the House at 4.30pm to give his reply to the President's inaugural speech to the legislature.

Later on Wednesday, the PN is expected to launch the process of appointing or confirming its party leader at a General Council meeting. The procedure is in line with the party’s statute following the general election.
