Alex Borg promises 'friendly' PN leadership contest with Adrian Delia
Age is just a number says 29-year-old lawyer who wants to be Opposition Leader
Nationalist MP Alex Borg said on Wednesday that his race against Adrian Delia for the PN leadership would be a friendly campaign.
"This will be a positive campaign and a race between friends. I believe it will be a nice race that, from my side will definitely not have negativity. I believe that my friend Adrian will do the same," he said.
Borg surprised many when he announced his interest to run for PN leadership late on Tuesday. He had previously met Delia and sources had said that they would not run against each other. However, the two could not agree on who would run.
Borg turned up at PN headquarters on Wednesday to submit his nomination.
He said his relationship with Delia, a former party leader and his political mentor, was a good one.
He said Delia was not surprised by his announcement, as he had encouraged others to run for the party leader role.
"This is a positive decision because members will have a choice from which they can decide where to take the party".
Borg said he would be loyal to whoever was elected leader.
'Age is just a number'
Borg who is 29, will be the youngest opposition leader in Maltese history if he is elected PN leader..
Labour leaders Dom Mintoff had been 32 and Joseph Muscat 34 when they picked up the reins.
But Borg said that "age is only a number".
"Obviously, I have much to learn but I believe that this would bring a generational change to the party and a new mentality from which it can inspire a new hope for Malta," he said.
He pointed out that the PN parliamentary group has a healthy mix of experience and youth.
"This will be a team effort. I believe that by using everyone's talents we can provide an alternative to the Labour Party," he said.
