Updated 3.53pm

A corpse was recovered from the sea near Ċirkewwa on Friday.

In a statement, police said they were alerted at around 1pm after a body was spotted in the water in the Ċirkewwa area.

The body is in an “advanced state of decomposition”.

The Armed Forces of Malta and the Civil Protection Department were dispatched to recover the body.

CPD said rescuers from stations 3 and 4 were deployed to Paradise Bay where they were assisted by members of the Air Wing section of the AFM in recovering the corpse.

Magistrate Philip Galea Farrugia has been informed of the case and appointed several experts to assist in the inquiry. Police investigations are ongoing.

This is the second body to be recovered from the sea this week, after another corpse, also in an advanced state of decomposition, was found in the area of Fomm ir-Riħ on Wednesday.

Last month, two other bodies were recovered from the sea, one at Ġnejna Bay and another at St George’s Bay, where a man’s body was found floating in the early hours of January 18.

In January, a 13-year old Polish tourist, Oliwia Wojnowska, died after being swept out to sea at Ċirkewwa. Her body was found after an intensive three day search.
