Father and five-year-old son killed in Ġnejna boat tragedy identified

They were in a small dinghy which was hit by a larger boat

A man and his son died tragically in an accident at sea in Ġnejna Bay in the early hours of Sunday.

The victims have been idenitified as Gregory O'Brien, 43, and his five-year-old son Logan, from St Paul's Bay.

They were hit by a fishing boat while they were on a small dinghy.

The accident happened at 1am.

As soon as the alarm was raised, officers of the Civil Protection Department launched a search for the man and the boy. Their lifeless bodies were recovered after a short while and brought to shore.

Both the dinghy and the boat were impounded. 

The victims had boarded the dinghy from a bigger boat offshore just a short time earlier, police said.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud is holding an inquiry. Police investigations are continuing.
