British tourist dies while swimming in the Blue Lagoon

He had just taken a slide into the sea from a tourist catamaran

A 43-year-old Briton died while swimming at the Blue Lagoon, in Comino on Tuesday.

The police said the man had just taken a slide down into the water from a tourist catamaran at 1.30pm when he found himself in difficulty.

Members of the public noticed he was underwater, pulled him up and started administering CPR. Voluntary first aiders of the ERRC quickly reached the scene and took over, carrying the man to Mgarr harbour where a hospital medical team was waiting. But he was certified dead on arrival at Victoria hospital.

Magistrate Brigitte Sultana is holding an inquiry.

This was the 13th case of drowning in Malta this year and the third in Comino.

In August a 35-year-old Italian man died after getting into difficulty, also at the Blue Lagoon while in April the body of a 71-year-old fisherman was found off the coast of Comino, hours after he was reported missing.

A Spanish tourist sustained grievous injuries in July after she was hit by a boat propeller as she was boarding a boat in Comino, a popular destination for tourists.

According to police figures, 14 people died in drowning incidents last year.
