Heavy truck spills construction debris on Sliema's Tower Road

Drivers advised to take alternative routes

A truck spilt its cargo of construction debris across Tower Road in Sliema on Wednesday morning.

The incident happened near Plaza shopping centre as rubble and building materials ended up scattered across the road.

In a video shared on social media, Sliema Local Council showed workers and volunteers attempting to clear the debris. The council advised road users to avoid turning onto Tower Road from the Zara clothing store.

“Please use alternative routes where possible and follow instructions from the authorities on site. We will provide updates once the area is cleared and safe to use again,” the council said.

It later shared a video showing workers washing the road and the council thanked residents for their patience.

The incident adds to the clean-up efforts people have had to carry out after Storm Harry hit the island.

Gusts hit more than 100 kilometres per hour on Tuesday, destroying farms, beaching fishing boats and smashing through seaside restaurants. The popular Għar Lapsi bay has been left unrecognisable.

In Sliema, a street light was torn off the promenade, glass from a bus shelter was shattered and a bulky steel ship mooring buoy ended up on Tower Road.

On Monday the mayor had to warn people to move away from the chalet area as powerful waves engulfed the coastline.
