Food safety authority issues warning about cumin powder and slimming tea
The Food Safety and Security Authority on Friday warned consumers not to consume two products flagged through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.
The first warning concerns Gulcan Cumin Powder, originating from India, due to the presence of unauthorised pesticides, as well as approved pesticides found above permitted levels.
The impacted batch is KMG/640 and the product is sold in 180g containers and 1kg bags.
A separate warning was issued for Sliming Tea Herb Thai Original, by the brand Sliming Herb, originating from Thailand.
The authority said the tea contains Senna Alexandrina Mill, a novel food which is not authorised.
The impacted product is sold in 41g packs and the warning applies to all dates and all lots.
“Novel food” refers to a foodstuff or food ingredient that was not used for human consumption to a significant degree in the EU before May 15, 1997, and therefore requires evaluation and authorisation before entering the EU market, the authority said.
Consumers are advised not to consume the products and either dispose of them or return them to the store from which they were bought.
