The Commissioner for Older Persons will ensure that the rights of the elderly are safeguarded, as ageism is real, according to Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana.

Introducing the Bill providing for the commissioner in second reading, Dr Caruana said the role would be to ensure vigilance on violence, abuse or exploitation.

It would ensure dignity and respect of the elderly as guiding principles. The Commissioner would be appointed by the Prime Minister after consultation with the Committee for Social Affairs. There would be a Council for the Elderly with broad representation.
