Sea at Wilġa Street, St Julians contaminated for second time in a month

Contamination could put swimmers' health at risk, Environmental Health Directorate

Swimmers have been warned to avoid the sea at Wilġa Street in St Julians after scientists detected contaminated water for the second time in a month.

In a statement, the Environmental Health Directorate said the contamination could affect bathing water quality and put swimmers' health at risk.

The source of the contamination has been identified and the issue has been addressed, the authorities added.

However, “at this stage” it was not possible to predict how long the warning will remain in effect.

It is the second time in a month that unsafe bacteria was found in the water.

On July 14 a warning was issued after an outflow of foul water contaminated the area.

That warning was lifted just ten days ago when repeated sampling confirmed that the seawater was safe.

Signs indicating the area have been put up and will remain in place until the sea water quality is restored.

Further information can be found on the directorate’s website, Facebook page, the EHD Bathing Portal or by calling 21337333 during office hours between 8.00 am and 2.30 pm.
