Għajnsielem’s Franciscan community bids farewell to Fr Walter Vassallo

Fr Vassallo will be moving to Ħamrun

The Franciscan community and parishioners of St Anthony’s church in Għajnsielem gathered together last Sunday to celebrate the 11am mass by Fr Walter Vassallo OFM who will be moving to Ħamrun to serve in the field of vocational promotion at the Franciscan community there.

The reading of the Gospel was led by the Guardian of the Franciscan Community in Gozo Marcello Ghirlando OFM, who also addressed the congregation with a heartfelt reflection, expressing gratitude for Fr Walter’s generous service and assuring him of the community’s prayers as he embarks on his new mission.

The First Reading and the Responsorial Psalm were proclaimed by Emmanuel Debrincat, while the Second Reading and the Gospel Acclamation (Alleluia) were read by Fra Darren Abela. The prayers of the faithful were led by Charles Spiteri, while the liturgical singing throughout the celebration was animated by Loredana Agius and Albert-Lauren Agius.

At the end of the celebration, members of the congregation gathered on the church parvis to bid Fr Walter a warm and affectionate farewell. Words of appreciation were expressed for his dedicated pastoral ministry, his availability and his faithful service among the people of Gozo. Many took the opportunity to personally thank him and offer their heartfelt good wishes as he responds to this new call entrusted to him by the Franciscan Order.

To mark the occasion, Fr Walter shared a celebratory cake with those present as a simple gesture of gratitude and fellowship. It was a joyful moment that reflected the strong bond he has built with the community over the years.

The Franciscan community of Għajnsielem will accompany Fr Walter with their prayers, asking the Lord to bless him abundantly and to continue guiding him as he encourages and accompanies young people in discerning God’s call in their lives.
